Letters from France C E W 18791968 Bean 9781176772038 Books
Brilliant concise writing from Australia's War Memorial author on WW1 and the appalling slaughter of the bother the Allies and the Germans in the battlefield of Fromelles and Pozieres and many other French battle grounds, told by an author who either was there when the battles occurred or went there fairly shortly thereafter. He also writes very well on the battered French soldiers and the many Scottish regiments and some great English regiments that fought on one side of the other of the Australian divisions.
His fairly object reporting has him writing of some very brave soldiers on both sides who recognized that there was still some honour in war, particularly when it came to the wounded.

Letters from France C E W 18791968 Bean 9781176772038 Books Reviews
Charles Bean gives a true journalistic account of life on the battlefields of France during WWI. Without being sentimental or overly patriotic he describe his awe for the Australian soldiers who lived in the trenches among the wastelands of France and the mateship that held them together and brought them through it all. He often compares the soldiers' surroundings and the logistics of the operation with those of Gallipoli giving san insight into the differences between the two battles but also highlighting the intensity of the hardships to be endured at both locations.
